Convergence: The Sacred Rite of Becoming Elementari
Classification: Doctrinal Rite (DR-01) | Pronunciation: (kuhn-VER-jens)
Common Definition:
Convergence is the sacred rite through which a human may permanently bind their soul-thread to an elemental affinity upon reaching their twenty-third year. Those who survive emerge as Elementari and enter lifelong service to the balance of the world. Those who perish are honored among the Unreturned, whose sacrifice is regarded as an act of devotion to the gods.
Historical Context:
According to Concord doctrine, the Rite of Convergence has been practiced since the earliest Tissian years following the First Harmony. It remains the foundation upon which modern civilization rests. Every Elementari has walked the trail to Riteborne Sanctuary and found alignment.
The ceremony is governed by strict tradition and overseen by the Tetrad Concordance of Viremont. Concord records preserve every successful Convergence and every name among the Unreturned. While the rite itself has remained remarkably unchanged for centuries, many records predating the Burning of Venna (4160 TE) are incomplete or no longer accessible.
Rite of Convergence at a Glance:
- 48 hours before – Mark of Becoming Ceremony
- 36 hours before – Vigil of Self (24 uninterrupted hours)
- 12 hours before – Feast of Witness and Affirmation of Alignment
- 2 hours before – Gathering at the Threshold and Passage of Severance
- 1 hour before – Walk to Riteborne Sanctuary
- Midnight of 23rd Birthday – The Threshold Rite and Entry into Darkness
- Following 48 hours – Rite of Convergence
- Upon Survival – The Reclaiming and Arcane Attestation
- 72 hours after Rite – If Unreturned, then Retrieval of the Unreturned occurs.
Success and Survival:
Although every citizen of Vireth becomes eligible to attempt Convergence upon reaching their twenty-third year, only a fraction ever choose the Rite. Each year, approximately 1.36 million Concord citizens celebrate their twenty-third birthday.
Of these:
| Citizens reaching their 23rd Year: | 1,360,000 |
| Aspirants who attempt Convergence: | 346,000 |
| Those who Become Elementari: | 78,000 (62,000 Basal, 16,000 Elite) |
| Those who are Unreturned: | 268,000 |
Please note, these numbers reflect only the populations of residents of the Concord nations: Aura, Igni, Tera, and Unda. Residents of non-Concord nations, most notably the Kingdom of Toler, are not included in these counts.
Conditions for Successful Convergence:
Modern Horisto studies and Sophontes scholarship identifies four interdependent variables that determine whether Convergence succeeds. No single condition is sufficient. Failure in any one almost always proves fatal.
- Aether Attunement – How much ambient aether a soul-thread can safely endure. Those with insufficient attunement experience catastrophic thread rupture before elemental binding can stabilize.
- Elemental Affinity Compatibility – Every soul resonates more naturally with certain elemental patterns. When affinity and soul-thread prove incompatible, Convergence collapses.
- Resonance of Soul-Thread – Resonance reflects how distinctly a life has shaped the soul-thread. Irreversible choices (whether born of sacrifice, grief, conviction, or ambition) leave echoes that strengthen magical cohesion.
- Clarity of Intention – Perhaps the least understood variable. Magic responds poorly to divided intention. The Concord teaches that the soul must stand wholly behind the choice to be transformed. Whether clarity reflects courage, identity, purpose, or something more remains debated among Sophontes scholars.
The Rite of Record:
Each year, on the third day of the Summer Solstice, the First Grammat stands before the assembled Concord and opens the Annals of Convergence, the official historical record of every successful Elementari since the Rite’s beginning.
The Rite of Record is not a celebration of individuals. It is the moment the previous year’s Convergents pass from private citizens into history. Nearly four out of every five who attempt the Rite never return. Every family knows someone whose name was never spoken from the Annals.
The purpose of the Rite is not to read every name as that would require days. Instead, the Annals preserve the year’s history through its record. The First Grammat announces:
- The total number of successful Convergences.
- The distribution among the four elemental affinities.
- The number of Elite manifestations.
- Significant shifts from previous years.
- Exceptional arcane manifestations judged historically noteworthy.
The emphasis is never on fame. It is on preserving an accurate account for future generations.
Restricted Notes:
Recent statistical reviews continue to demonstrate significant regional disparities in Convergence survival. Official explanations attribute these differences to variations in culture, preparation, and hereditary factors.
Several restricted studies suggest the influence of additional variables not acknowledged within public doctrine.
