Common Definition:

A Deoi is an individual whose soul-thread has been permanently bound to at least one elemental affinity through the Rite of Desmos.

Historical Context:

Unlike ordinary humans, whose aether remains adaptable throughout life, an Deoi’s soul-thread is permanently reshaped. This transformation grants greatly increased magical capacity, extended lifespan, and enhanced physical resilience, but at the cost of flexibility, fertility, and eventual separation from ordinary human experience.

The Concord teaches that Deoi represent humanity’s highest calling and serve as guardians of civilization through stewardship of elemental power.

Humans and Deoi:

Although every Deoi is born human, not every human chooses, or survives, the Rite of Desmos.

The overwhelming majority of the population remains human throughout life. Humans retain complete adaptability of their soul-thread, allowing continued spiritual and personal growth, though they possess only limited capacity to channel ambient aether. Deoi, by contrast, sacrifice that adaptability in exchange for permanence.

Modern Horisto scholarship generally recognizes several defining differences:

  • Humans
    • Normal lifespan
    • Flexible soul-thread
    • Limited magical endurance
    • Continue developing spiritually throughout life
    • May pursue any vocation regardless of magical ability
  • Deoi
    • Lifespans approaching four centuries
    • Reinforced soul-thread permanently bound to one element
    • Enhanced magical endurance and physical capability
    • Attunement permanently fixed after Desmos
    • Gradually become increasingly influenced by their elemental affinity over centuries

Successful Desmos leaves behind permanent signs recognizable throughout the Concord. Every Deoi bears their elemental Axiom along the left side of the neck. This reddish ceremonial tattoo is fused to the skin and identifies someone as binding to Air (bisected triangle), Earth (bisected upside-down triangle), Fire (triangle), and/or Water (upside-down triangle).

Furthermore, subtle physical reflections of their affinity may become more visible, such as ember-flecked eyes, mineralized nails, unusually cool skin, or hair that stirs without wind.

Basal and Elite Manifestations:

Not every successful Desmos produces the same degree of resonance.

Basal Deoi – The vast majority of surviving Deoi manifest only the natural abilities associated with their elemental affinity.

Examples include:

  • Air (aeromancers) – heightened agility and atmospheric perception
  • Earth (geomancers) – increased durability and affinity with stone and soil
  • Fire (pyromancers) – heat resistance and greater endurance
  • Water (hydromancers) – increased flexibility and resistance to toxins

Basal Deoi form the backbone of Concord society and comprise most civic officials, artisans, soldiers, physicians, and scholars.

Elite Deoi – A small minority awaken an additional arcane power unique to their resonance. These manifestations vary enormously between individuals and are rarely inherited exactly.

Some known examples include:

  • Air – Candor, Telepathy, Soundsmith, Oathbinder
  • Earth – Healer, Raphar, Weftbound, Zoolinguism
  • Fire – Shield, Forgecraft, Tactician, Alchemy
  • Water – Dreamwalk, Phasing, Shapeshift, Moodswinger

Many Elite manifestations remain uncommon enough that some are known only through Sophontes records or restricted Concord archives.

Rare Manifestations – Although most Deoi bind to a single elemental affinity, Concord records recognize exceptionally uncommon classifications.

  • A Dual Elite is someone who successfully manifests two elemental affinities simultaneously. Such individuals are extraordinarily rare, with less than a thousand appearing in recorded history. Most become figures of considerable political, military, or scholarly importance due to the unusual breadth of their abilities.
  • A Tri Elite is someone who successfully manifests three elemental affinities simultaneously. This is theoretical as it would require a soul-thread capable of maintaining three resonance fields without mutual rejection. It is a catastrophic probability. There is no historical record of such an individual.
  • An Omni Elite is someone whose soul-thread demonstrates stable resonance across all four elemental affinities. No accepted theory adequately explains how such a Desmos could occur. Concord archives recognize only one confirmed Omni Elite in all recorded history. (See Reina Thane.) The phenomenon is officially classified as an anomaly.

Social Significance:

While Concord doctrine teaches that all citizens possess equal worth before the gods, society often distinguishes between humans and Deoi in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle ) ways.

Deoi occupy nearly every position requiring significant magical authority. Among them are senior positions within the Concord, the Concord’s High Archons, provincial nobility, and military officers.

Human citizens remain indispensable throughout every nation as merchants, craftsmen, farmers, physicians, laborers, and civic officials, yet comparatively few occupy the highest offices of magical governance.

This imbalance has led some philosophers to question whether political authority increasingly follows magical capability rather than public trust. Such discussions remain controversial.

Political Importance:

Because only Deoi can reliably wield large-scale elemental magic, governments depend upon them for nearly every institution that sustains civilization. Most commonly, Deoi oversee national magical infrastructure, defensive barriers, healthcare, military command, and historical preservation.

As a result, questions surrounding Desmos influence nearly every aspect of public policy. Debates concerning access to training, regional survival rates, hereditary Elite lineages, and the concentration of magical authority remain among the most politically sensitive topics in the Concord.

Restricted Notes:

Although Concord doctrine celebrates Deoi as humanity perfected, several restricted Horisto treatises observe an opposing pattern.

As centuries pass, many Deoi become progressively less human in thought, memory, and emotional experience, identifying more closely with the elemental affinity bound to their soul-thread than with the lives they once lived. Whether this represents transcendence, deterioration, or an unavoidable consequence of Desmos remains officially unresolved.
